What is SIBO?
SIBO is short for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, and this product is about dog natural SIBO treatment as an alternative to medication. Traditionally common amongst German Shepherd Dogs, in recent years, SIBO has become common amongst dogs suffering with chronic small intestinal disease.
Under normal circumstances, the bulk of your dog’s bacteria resides in the colon where it breaks down its food into nutrients which then filter through to the bloodstream to provide its energy and fuel all its bodily functions. But if your dog is suffering from bacterial overgrowth, specifically small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or SIBO, that becomes a problem. Because instead of bacteria breaking down your dog’s food into nutrients in the colon, the increased numbers of bacteria congregating in the small intestine damage its lining preventing nutrient absorption and creating a number of specific problems. These include malabsorption, bloating and chronic diarrhoea which on occasion can also be associated with increased wind, and of course, SIBO, which is amongst the fastest growing canine health problems. Frequently, weight loss is the only symptom.
The more we learn about gut health, the greater our understanding of the importance of a healthy gut, the more we are learning about this hidden disease. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in dogs is defined as excessive bacteria in the small intestine.
Your dog’s gut bacteria is vital for its health and wellbeing. The vast majority of its immune system is in the gut so it’s important it functions as nature intended. But when gut bacteria is more prevalent in the small intestine than the large, it interferes with your dog’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. This can result in undiagnosed weight loss and malabsorption due to nutrient deficiencies, despite the fact that your dog continues to eat normally.
Traditional treatment of canine SIBO and why it doesn’t work
It’s a well-established fact that antibiotics don’t work for SIBO. In addition to carrying troubling side-effects, even after long-term use, SIBO invariably returns. Not only that, antibiotics can cause gut issues which might further exacerbate the situation.
Dog natural SIBO treatment
The natural and most obvious solution to treating SIBO in dogs is with dietary intervention. To a dog nutritionist, it’s the most obvious solution to treating most dog health problems. 80% of your dog’s immune system is in the gut, and 4 out of 5 dogs can have their health problems cured or improved with an improved diet. With better food. So it makes sense to speak to a dog nutritionist if your dog is suffering from bacterial overgrowth.
