Raw Dog Food Feeding Guide

There is no more passionate and committed a group of dog parents than those who choose to feed their dogs raw food. Raw feeders brook no argument. To them raw dog food is the best and only way to feed a dog and there’s a considerable amount of evidence to support their claims.

There are two main forms of feeding a dog species-appropriate, raw food using this raw dog food feeding guide.

The Prey Model diet, also known as the 80-10-10 diet. This is based on the bilogical makeup of a dog’s wild prey. Mainly comprising of small mammals whose physical structure comprises 80% muscle, 10% organs and 10% bones.
The Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or BARF model, a model which incorporates fruits and vegetables. This model seeks to immitate a wild dog’s true diet, which would have included their wild prey’s stomach contents of fresh vegetation including fruits and vegetables.

As a raw feeder today, you have a number of choices. You can buy all the fresh raw ingredients and make up your dog’s raw diet yourself. A complete homemade raw diet. Or you can buy ready-prepared, raw commercial products from any of dozens of companies who effectively supply you with raw ready meals for your dog. Whichever you choose, there are a number of compelling reasons to ditch the kibble and either feed raw or homemade dog food.

Benefits of raw dog food

The benefits of feeding your dog fresh raw food are enormous. They include:

Improved digestion
Better dental health
Less likelihood of allergies
Improved gut health
Reduced possibility of food intolerances
Improved skin & coat
Easier weight management
Increased energy levels

There is no doubt you will see a huge difference in your dog if you follow my raw dog food feeding guide and begin feeding your dog a species-appropriate raw diet. Everything from smaller, less smelly stools to much healthier skin and coat. In point of fact, there are a great many reasons why raw is the fastest growing trend in the dog food sector.

But feeding a dog a raw diet is not quite as simple as it might at first seem. There are a number of things you have to consider. Most importantly perhaps, the subject of calcium supplementation. Then you need to consider the organ to muscle meat ratio. How much to feed. How much fat to include. Whether or not to add fruit and vegetables. (I recommend you do by the way). And what about oils and other supplements? And then there’s the thorny issue of hygiene which concerns some pet parents.

There’s a lot to consider before you start raw feeding your dog. My dog raw dog food feeding guide for beginners is definitely a good place to start!
