Pedigree dog lifespan survey
In 2014 The Kennel Club carried out a survey on the lifespan of pedigree dogs. It was the largest survey of its kind to-date. This was no Micky Mouse dog lifespan survey involving a handful of dogs dressed up to represent our entire canine population. It involved no less than 48,891 dogs spanning 191 breeds. Pretty comprehensive I’d say. Okay, The Kennel Club only represents pedigree dogs. But there’s no reason to believe that non-pedigree dogs fare any better or worse than the dogs in this particular survey.
The results were shocking. Especially given the vast amounts of money spent on advertising by the multi-billion pound commercial dog food industry and all the nonsense expressed in terms of the health benefits of its questionable produce. You would have expected the lifespan of today’s dogs to have improved not worsened, wouldn’t you? But you’d be wrong. They have worsened. Considerably. Since their previous survey ten years earlier, they have worsened. Worsened to the point where your pedigree dog, depending on its breed of course, could on average expect to live 1 year less than when the previous survey was carried out ten years earlier. For some breeds, the prognosis is even worse!
The big question
The question is, why? Not why are dogs living shorter lives because we know that. The question is why are people still believing the lies perpetuated by the commercial dog food industry. Let’s face it. By and large they wouldn’t know the truth if it turned into a giant, slavering, two-headed, rabid dog and bit them in their collectively enormous backside.
Yes, there are a number of causes. Two in particular which I’m afraid lay blame at the collective foot of the pet industry and the veterinary profession. But since nutrition is at the heart of most illnesses both canine and human in the 21st century, nutrition is the enemy which should be tackled first. It’s the biggest enemy and the easiest to defeat. Feed your dog proper food!
Poisoned for profit
There’s a very good reason why the contents of a packet of dog food aren’t representative of the fancifully appealing images displayed on the outside. They’re not the same. They were never the same. Ever! Commercial dog food is made using by-products from the human food industry. The waste that would otherwise go to landfill. It’s combined with by-products (chemicals) from the oil industry. And it’s blended with a by-product from the commercial logging industry that when I tell you is likely to beggar belief. Are you ready for it? Your dog food is more likely than not to contain an unhealthily large helping of wood pulp. Sawdust to you and I. Don’t believe me? Look it up!
The reason dogs today are living shorter lives than ever before is that they are being poisoned in the name of profit. Your dog has a digestive tract broadly similar to yours and mine. Okay, there are differences. But it’s broadly the same. Your dog has a digestive system which allows it to process and benefit from more or less the same food that you and I eat. It is not and was not designed to survive let alone thrive on a bowl of synthetic biscuit every day.
The reason so many of today’s dogs don’t live through to old age but instead die of liver failure, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and cancer and suffer throughout their shortened lives with things like allergies, arthritis, dermatitis and obesity? It’s largely down to commercial dog food.
What are derivatives anyway?
That’s why the ingredients in commercial dog food hide behind terms like ‘meat and animal derivatives’ and ‘derivatives of vegetable origin’. They don’t want you to know what you’re feeding your dog. They don’t want you to know you’re poisoning your dog. Because the former legally comprises such things as hooves, hair and feathers. And the latter legally comprises such things as the aforementioned wood pulp. Yes, that previously mentioned sawdust in your dog’s commercial dog biscuit. It’s hiding inside those ‘derivatives of vegetable origin.’ Absolutely true. Look it up!
Oh and then there’s the chemical flavourings and colourings. Many of which by the way have been linked to behavioural problems and other health concerns in both dogs and human beings. And of course there are artificial preservatives like BHA and BHT. Both of which have been identified as possible causes of cancer.
Feed real food for longer dog lifespan
If you want your dog to live a longer, fitter and healthier life, feed it proper food. Real food. Proper meat and vegetables which pet parents have successfully fed their dogs for thousands of years. Long, long before the commercial pet food industry hijacked the market and stifled our common sense. It’s the only way to increase dog lifespan.
So that means no animal derivatives which enable commercial dog food companies to use absolutely anything that ultimately derived from an animal. Without ever stating which part of the animal or even which animal it came from. And of course which legally permits them to make changes on an ongoing basis according to what’s cheapest at the time. And no vegetable derivatives which includes the likes of wood pulp, but proper vegetables likes carrots and peas, cabbage and kale.
