Why is My Dog Losing Weight?

by | Dog Health | 0 comments

Dog weight loss is one of the most common reasons pet parents consult this particular canine nutritionist. “Why is my dog losing weight?” I’m frequently asked. “My dog eats his food, seems to enjoy his food, but never gains weight no matter how much I feed him”. I’m actually consulting on four such cases as I write, and it seems no two cases are ever the same.

Diabetes mellitus

One of the first things that springs to mind when a dog fails to maintain its weight is diabetes. Unfortunately, rapid weight loss and diabetes mellitus seem to go hand in hand.

Your dog’s body relies on insulin to break down blood sugar for energy. Without sufficient insulin, your dog’s system uses proteins and fats for energy. So while those energy-rich sugars remain in the bloodstream wreaking havoc with your dog’s organs, the proteins that your dog would normally use to build muscle and repair tissue are consumed for energy.

It’s a double-edged sword. While the sugars attack your dog’s heart, kidneys and other organs, it’s body literally starves because it’s forced to use protein for energy. As a result it loses condition, suffers muscle wastage and could ultimately succumb to multiple organ failure.

If you believe your dog is suffering from diabetes mellitus, naturally you should consult your vet. With the correct medication and a healthy diet devised by a canine nutritionist specifically for dogs suffering from diabetes, there is no reason why your dog could not continue to lead a long and active life.

Intestinal malabsorption

Intestinal malabsorption resulting from a protein intolerance is another common cause of dog weight loss. If your dog develops an intolerance to one or a number of proteins, it will not be able to extract and benefit from the nutrients in its food. In this case you need to work with your local dog nutritionist to eliminate the problem proteins by initiating an elimination diet. Once the problem protein or proteins have been identified, I can help you devise a healthy eating guide for your best friend that will use other, equally beneficial proteins.

Other health problems

Other canine health problems that can cause sudden weight loss include exocrine pancreatic inefficiency (EPI), kidney disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and parasites. All such concerns should first be addressed by your vet before consulting a canine nutritionist to help you create a healthy diet for your dog.

It can also be caused by other malabsorption or maldigestion problems. These include anorexia nervosa, intestinal tract disease (lymphangiectasia) and canine hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease).

If you are at all concerned about your dog’s inability to gain weight or its weight loss, please book a consultation.

Whatever your dog’s health problem, a fresh food diet has been scientifically proven to be the best medicine. A healthy diet can cure or improve up to 80% of canine health problems. Please don’t sentence your best friend to a life of so-called prescription food. Do the right thing. Make fresh food for your dog!
