Leaky Gut Syndrome in Dogs

by | Dog Health | 0 comments

If your dog is suffering from leaky gut syndrome (canine gut dysbiosis) the very first thing you need to address is its diet. While gut dysbiosis can be caused by a number of things, your dog’s diet would be the best place to start. But just what is leaky gut syndrome in dogs, what are its causes and how can it best be rectified? And what if the vast majority of canine health conditions actually had their basis in leaky gut syndrome, and if finding a solution to leaky gut syndrome in dogs could cure just about every conceivable canine disease?

What is canine leaky gut syndrome?

The term canine leaky gut syndrome or gut dysbiosis refers to changes in the microsystem of the good bacteria (the microflora) that live in your dog’s gut. The ‘gut’ by the way is comprised of your dog’s stomach, it’s small and large intestine or colon. If I tell you that between 80 and 90% of your dog’s immune system is in its gut, you’ll have some better idea of just how important good gut health is!

The fact is that any compromise in the integrity of the lining of your dog’s intestinal tract gives the bad bacteria free reign to cause havoc to your dog’s health. Your dog’s intestines contain millions and millions of different species of bacteria together with viruses, yeast and parasites. Collection known as its microbiome, they all live in peaceful coexistence until the lining of the intestinal tract is compromised!

Such a compromise, a ‘leak’ in your dog’s gut, allows bad bacteria to proliferate and enter your dog’s bloodstream. This can result in a whole raft of debilitating symptoms. These in turn can lead to a large number of inflammation-based health conditions. When I tell you that the vast majority of canine health problems, including heart disease, arthritis and cancer, are caused by chronic inflammation, you’ll have some idea for the potential problems a leaky gut can cause!

Causes of leaky gut syndrome

The causes of leaky gut syndrome in dogs are many and various. They include:

  • Poor diet
  • Antibiotics
  • Other medications including NSAIDs and antihistamines
  • Processed foods
  • Stress
  • Toxins
  • Vaccinations

While there is no one test that will establish whether or not your dog is suffering from leaky gut syndrome in dogs, we still know much about its actual causes. Much that you and I can do to improve your dog’s condition without worsening the problem with veterinary medication.

Symptoms of leaky gut syndrome

  • Bloating
  • Flatulance
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain and digestive problems
  • Hyperactivity
  • Bladder infections
  • Weight loss
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Allergies and skin problems
  • Arthritis and joint pain

While these symptoms can be indicative of many canine health conditions, a consultation with a canine nutritionist will help establish whether your dog’s symptoms relate to leaky gut or some other health concern.
