As a canine nutritionist, I work closely with my clients to determine the very best diet for their individual dog. When it comes to feeding a dog, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Just like human beings, dogs are individuals. No two dogs are the same. You cannot expect a healthy dog if you don’t feed your dog a healthy diet. And that means a healthy diet for your individual dog. If you searched for a ‘canine nutritionist near me’, you’ve come to the right place!
Dogs are individuals
Because every dog is an individual, your dog’s diet needs to be tailored just for your individual best friend. I can create a diet plan that will benefit the average dog with, say, arthritis, and that may well work just fine for your dog. But then again, your individual dog may need his or her diet adjusted slightly to cater for individual food preferences. Perhaps he or she has an intolerance to lamb or a specific liking for venison. You can’t go to the shop and buy a dog food specifically tailored to the likes and dislikes of your individual dog. But you can have a dog nutritionist create a diet plan that will keep your dog happy in the food department!
As many people now know, I have two dogs. A 47kg male and a 35kg female. Marco is 7 and Ava is 4. Logic would dictate that the larger dog would need the greater amount of food. But that is not the case. Ava, the more energetic of the two, has a higher metabolic rate. She burns calories like they’re going out of fashion. As a result, she requires more food than her brother in order to maintain a stable weight.
Her digestive system also works slightly different from Marco’s. If fed exactly the same food, Marco’s stool will be firm and more or less without smell. Ava’s meanwhile will be looser, contain more moisture and have a stronger odour. So not only does Ava have a larger portion size than Marco, her menu is slightly different too. My dogs are lucky to have a canine nutritionist for a dad don’t you think?
Different health problem, different diet
Touch wood, neither of my dogs sufferers from a health problem. I just need to make allowance for their different metabolic rates and different digestive systems. But if your dog has a health problem, his or her health can be greatly improved with a customized dog diet.
A dog diet plan specifically tailored for a dog suffering from bladder stones needs to be different from the diet for a dog suffering from cancer. Likewise, the ideal diet for a dog suffering from canine pancreatitis will be different from the diet for a dog suffering from ear infections.
Dogs suffering from such canine health problems don’t need an off-the-shelf prescription diet from their vet. They need a personalized dog diet plan from a canine nutritionist.
