Kibble for dogs

If you feed your dog kibble, have you ever given serious thought to what you’re actually feeding your dog? Look at it, then look at your dog. Is that really the best you can do for your best friend? Is that all he or she really means to you? Ask yourself how valued you would feel if that was presented to you twice a day for the entirety of your life!

For anyone unsure of what I’m talking about, kibble for dogs is dry dog biscuit. It’s that stuff commercial pet food manufacturers sell by the ton on the pretext it is all your dog needs in the way of sustenance throughout its entire life. That stuff that masquerades as food. The same thing one prominent American vet calls “cardboard with vitamins sprayed on.”

If you are a kibble feeder, please consider this for a moment. And please, think about this as though you were your dog.

Just as food plays an important part in your life, it does exactly the same for your dog. Or at least it should. Food is not just about sustenance. Any old food would provide you with sustenance. Burger and chips twice a day for an entire year would provide you with sustenance. It would provide you with little else of course. Few vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and those essential building blocks of life, amino acids.

Imagine you’re a dog

But here’s the thing. When you put down your dog’s bowl of kibble this evening, think about this. Imagine having that put in front of you twice a day for an entire year. That’s exactly the same meal, 730 times a year.

Okay, now imagine you’re your dog and you live until the age of 10. That means you will have been fed that same meal 7,300 times during your lifetime. How valued are you feeling right now? Your dog parent thinks so little of you, he or she has made you eat that 7,300 times during your lifetime because it’s cheaper and more convenient for them.

Okay, now imagine you’re your dog and you live until the age of 14. That means you will have endured that same meal, that same cardboard with vitamins sprayed on, a total of 10,220 times throughout your 14 years. That’s the same meal, the same food, ten thousand two hundred and twenty times. If you’re your dog, how valued are you feeling right now?

Food should bring pleasure

Now aside from the fact that commercial dog food, specifically kibble, is so inherently unhealthy, just imagine the sheer boredom of being fed that exact same meal twice a day for the entirety of your life. Think of the enjoyment you will have been deprived of.

That thing that gives human beings so much pleasure twice and more a day, denied you because the human being you share your life with doesn’t care enough about you to invest in proper food. And that’s what proper food is, you know. It’s an investment.

Invest wisely

When you feed your dog, you are effectively investing in its future. You are laying down the foundation for its ongoing health. Feed real food, invest wisely, and your best friend could expect to live a long and healthy life. Keep feeding kibble, and the chances are you’ll spend far more money on vet bills than fresh food would ever have cost you.

I urge you to put yourself in your dog’s place. Aside from the enormous health benefits, think about the extra pleasure your dog could get from eating proper food. Food that is not dry, nutritionally-bereft left-overs and by-products laced with chemicals. Food that is not cardboard with vitamins sprayed on, but real food. The kind of food dogs ate for thousands of years before the relatively recent introduction of commercial dog food.

The kind of food that kept dogs healthier and longer lived than they are today. Because that’s a fact you know. Today’s dogs live unhealthier, shorter lives than at any time in history. Why? Because pet parents don’t question that gunk they’re feeding their dog twice a day for the entirety of their lives. Because they take the easier, cheaper option. They keep on feeding their dog kibble for dogs!
