Can dogs eat moringa?
Yes — dogs can eat moringa. Moringa is rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which can boost your dog’s immune system, increase energy levels and improve cognitive function.
Canine nutritionist Gerald Pepin is the author of the book From Table to Bowl which seeks to take the mystery out of feeding dogs fresh food. Here the experienced dog nutritionist explains the benefits and safe serving tips for feeding a dog moringa.
What is moringa?
A drought-resistant tree also known as the drumstick or miracle tree, the moringa tree is a fast-growing tree native to south Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, today it’s being hailed globally as a true superfood.
What makes this ‘miracle’ tree all the more remarkable is that all parts of it can be used — bark, flowers, leaves, pods, roots and its seeds which are pressed for oil.
And the best bit? Moringa is not just good for humans. Moringa is also beneficial for dogs too!
What are the nutrients in moringa?
Moringa is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Particularly the leaves. The leaves are rich in Vitamin A. Ten times the amount found in a carrot. They’re also rich in various B vitamins and vitamin C. So rich in fact that they contain 12 times the vitamin C found in an orange!
They’re also an excellent source of calcium, iron (26 times the amount of iron found in spinach), magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. And they have trace amounts of potassium, sodium and zinc. Low in fat, they’re also a good source of dietary fibre and protein. That lot must surely make moringa one of the healthiest plants most people have never heard of!
What are the benefits of feeding a dog moringa?
Moringa offers huge science-backed benefits for dogs, primarily thanks to its rich content of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. This amazing plant benefits from having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It can help reduce cholesterol, promote a healthy digestive system and benefit circulation. It can also boost your dog’s immune system, increase energy levels and improve your dog’s brain function.
There is also a belief it may help dogs suffering from canine diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer. And that it’s beneficial as a natural detoxifier.
Moringa’s key health benefits include:
Beneficial antioxidants
Moringa leaves are packed with antioxidants like quercetin, chlorogenic acid and beta-carotene. These help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the body.
May lower blood sugar levels
Several animal studies together with early human trials suggest that compounds in moringa may help manage blood glucose and insulin levels. This make it a potential aid for dogs suffering from diabetes.
Anti-inflammatory properties
Moringa contains anti-inflammatory compounds such as polyphenols and isothiocyanates which may help protect the body against chronic diseases linked to inflammation. This include canine arthritis and heart disease.
Liver protective
In animal studies the high levels of protective polyphenols in moringa have been shown to help protect the liver against damage and promote the recovery of damaged tissue.
Beneficial for heart health
Research suggests moringa may help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and manage blood pressure. This can reduce the risk of heart disease in dogs.
Boosts immune function
As a rich source of vitamins A and C and minerals like iron and zinc, moringa helps strengthen the immune system and protect against infection.

Can I give my dog a moringa supplement?
It’s important to remember with any supplement that nothing beats natural. Synthetic supplements or multivitamins carry the risk of potential side-effects. And that is aside from the fact that scientific research suggests your dog’s body does not know how to deal with synthetic supplements so is unable to utilise them properly.
Natural moringa supplements however are a different matter. Because moringa is 100% natural, its nutrients are more bioavailable to your dog. That means they’re better absorbed by your dog’s body.
You may not have heard of moringa for dogs before, but you’re certainly going to hear a lot more about it in the future!
If you’ve used moringa for your dog, I would love to know how you got on. Nothing beats feedback from pet parents who have actually given their dog a moringa supplement, especially if it has had a positive effect on their constant canine companion. It will also help others answer the question, can dogs eat moringa?
And if I can help further, do please book a consultation and we’ll work together to improve the health of your best friend!

Thanks to The Most High I found you. My Lola has diabetes and I am looking for a way to help her with food. I use Moringa powder for myself and wonder how much can I sprinkle on her food? Please help me. Thank you.
Well they say, for a 2-5kg dog 1/4-1/2 teaspoon a day, for a 5-20kg dog 1 teaspoon a day, for a 20-40kg dog 2 teaspoons a day and for a dog weighing 40+kg 1 tablespoon a day. I hope that helps and do please let me know how you get on.

Got a moringa tree so I give my dogs fresh pick leaves in there food
Hi I have started to use moringa drumsticks for my dog. I add it to the pressure cooker with other veggies and before I give him the food, I remove the sticks and use only the pulp.
Came across your article looking if moringa seeds are ok for dogs. I consume 5 daily and every time I open the bag my corgi is all up in it smelling it. I found lots of information on the powder being ok but can’t find any on the actual seed. I have started giving him 1 large seed or 2 small ones a day when I take mine. He seems to enjoy them. He even chews them up. Part of me wants to believe he can smell the nutrients and knows it’s good for him. He’s 30lbs so just wondering if you have an advice on if a good dosage or if the seeds are safe like the powder.
Yes, Michelle, the seeds are perfectly safe for dogs. They will help boost his immune system just as they do yours. 1 large seed or two small seeds per day will be fine.
My dog got ahold of one of Moringa tree trunks and found her chewing it. How much of the Moringa tree trunk can my dog handle?
Can I use organic spices moringa powder that I myself use for the great benefits
Yes, you can.
What do you suggest giving to dogs with inflamed armpits. No open areas. He licks alot but doesn’t chew. I’m giving him a supplement with pro and prebiotics , fish oil, moringa oil and herbs.

Hello
My dobermann has just been diagnosed with a osteosarcoma on his front leg. I have opted for amputation and chemo.
Can you advise whether it would benefit him taking the moringa powder?
Hi, It may well be of benefit. Moringa leaf is a proven anti-osteosarcoma agent given a sufficiently high dosage. In a study published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology, researchers evaluated the effects of myricetin (a flavonoid found in moringa) in the treatment of canine osteosarcoma and found it induces apoptosis (cell death) in osteosarcoma cells. Of course moringa is just one of many potentially beneficial natural products that could help your dog.
I know the benifit of moringa & how it gives me vitality. I thought might as well give it to the dog! She loves it & she’s super active & happy after
I have a diabetic dog. She is on insulin and special food but still is constantly hungry. Saw a posting that a human started taking moringa leaves and stopped his insulin. Would that also work for my dog? She is probably not going to live to be much older than 10 or so (she is now 9) but I am trying to help her be as comfortable as possible.
I have a 10 year old schnauzer she is 16 pounds diabetic 2 1/2 units of insulin 2 times a day will this help her
Studies show that it may have some benefits.
My dog has cancer lymphoma will Moringa help her get better ?
Moringa will certainly help your dog, but I can’t promise it will help her get better.
I have a 9 year old Labrador. She has had skin issues from about age 2 on. She get Moringa powder daily. It has helped but she still has issues. She is really allergic to dust mites. I’m am looking to add items for gut health as well. I want to get her off of RXs. Is Moringa ok for continued use or does she need breaks from it?
que buen dato.. y que otras hierbas puede ayudar en perros con tumores??
You can reverse your dogs diabetes by not giving trash kibble any more. Get your dog on a biologically appropriate raw diet. You can now buy it pre made frozen at most pet food stores. A dog should not be eating crackers its whole life. That’s how they end up with metabolic disorders.
My 65 pound blk lab has some skin issues. I’ve tried the vets from coast to coast and nothing helped, I went to natural and everything works for a while and then it just comes back. Anyway, I now have moringa oil. I’m massaging into her skin and…….. healing quite nicely. At first we were both taking it internally and then I noticed it isn’t for internal use. Now I’ve found that only the carrier oil is internal and the cold pressed isn’t (or essential oils). Do you have any recommendations on how much I should let her eat… when I get the carrier oil? She just loves it!!!! I think she knows it’s working for her so she just wants to eat it LOL. I have tried coconut oil and she loved that too, but found out she is highly allergic. She would probably lick up a 1/8 cup in a heart beat!! Do you think that would be ok? Besides what I’m putting on her skin. From what I’ve read I don’t think you can really get too much, of course I’d start small and increase as we go. Thank you for all you do.
Hello, i bought moringa tincture, 120ml of NaturalmA. Please be kind and tell me How many drops per day for a cavalier bitch? 7-8kg. Thank you
Will this work for hip arthritis?
I use Moringa Leaf Powder in my nutritional routine. I read some studies that stated the benefits of Moringa for domestic animals, especially for dogs. Some dangers were listed regarding the roasting process of the leaves in some products, but I don’t use roasted Moringa leaf powder. My Moringa product comes from the Punjab region of India.
Can I use moringa powder for my cat with stage 2 kidney disease? I’m wondering if the phosphorus in it would not be very beneficial?
I looked at supplements of Moringa and they weren’t cheap. I found a couple of good quality Indian grocers that were selling packets of raw moringa pwdr for $Aud 6.99. They are 300grams!!!
Converted to supplements price that would come in close to $Au 1000 !!!!!
I use it for myself regularly and all the indications are it is simply dried moringa with nothing else in it!
I have vegan friends who have been to India and seen the production of similar products from the same company and there is nothing complicated about it. So now I am giving it to my greyhound Fast Eddie. 😊👍
