Can people eat dog food?
I try everything I make for my dogs. As individuals, my wife and I have always been very particular about the food we eat. We firmly believe that the food we eat is effectively an investment for our future health. The better we eat today and tomorrow, the healthier we are likely to be in the future.
As a canine nutritionist, I apply that same philosophy to the homemade food I make for our dogs. Those of us who home cook for our dogs are investing in their future health. The better we feed them, the healthier they are likely to be and the longer they are likely to be part of our lives.
That’s why the meat I use in our dogs’ meals is supplied by the same local suppliers who supply the meat my wife and I eat. The same goes for the fish, fruit and vegetables and wholefoods we use. Our entire family, both human and canine, eat exactly the same food!
What is dog food anyway?
This poses the question, just what is dog food? And are my dogs eating dog food or people food? And when it comes to the rest of the human population, are we eating people food or are we eating dog food? I’ve actually previously argued that we as human beings are eating dog food!
To précis my previously published views, since the distant ancestors of the domestic dog inhabited this planet of ours before we human beings, every human being on the planet today is eating dog food.
So when someone tells you that it’s wrong for dogs to eat people food they’re actually incorrect. They’re actually incorrect on a number of levels, but that’s another matter!
But from the point of view of this particular article, of course dogs can eat people food. Because in point of fact, there is no dog food. There is no people food. There is just food. So the answer to the question, “can people can eat dog food,” is yes, they most certainly can!
People and dogs can eat the same food
So there is no reason why your dog should eat any differently from you or the rest of your family.
Your dog has a digestive system not so different from yours and mine. It’s a digestive system designed to benefit from a great many foodstuffs. Most of the same foodstuffs that you and I can eat, enjoy and benefit from. That being the case, why should your dog not eat, enjoy and benefit from the same food you eat?
I always try the food I cook for my dogs. After all, what self-respecting chef doesn’t try the food he sends our from his kitchen? And if my wife and I don’t actually make a meal of our dogs’ food for ourselves, it’s not because we can’t, it’s because we would feel guilty for eating a meal that was prepared for them and not us. Trust me, there have been times when we’ve been tempted. Especially when we’ve gotten to late evening and we’ve been so busy preparing a bulk cook for the dogs that we’ve forgotten to cook for ourselves.
I highly recommend you try your dog’s food. Because if you are not prepared to eat it, why should your dog?
