Just what are natural dog treats?
Natural dog treats are everywhere it seems, but just how natural are they? From a personal perspective, I expect a natural dog treat to be 100% natural.
For me that means:
- No synthetic ingredients
- No additives
- No preservatives
- No flavour enhancers
- No colourings
- No fillers
- No binders
Dog treat mixes
To that end, I am involved with The Dog Chef. It’s a business which makes and sells Bake & Treat dog treat mixes. As their resident dog nutritionist, I insist that every single ingredient used in their dog treat mixes is 100% natural. I also ensure that every ingredient used is nutritionally beneficial to man’s best friend.
Dog treat mixes are the ideal way to make homemade dog treats. In addition to being natural and healthy, they come complete with all dry ingredients included. Where there is the occasional supplementary ingredient required, it’s generally something simple like an egg or a dash of olive oil.
Every ingredient used is both dog-safe and fit for human consumption. That means they’re safe for both you and your dog to eat. How many dog treats can you say that about?
What’s more, I personally try every dog treat made with one of my recipes. Believe it or not, there are some I actually prefer to any baked goods for humans! Many of my particular favourite mixes are rich in natural herbs and spices. No artificial flavourings in these homemade dog treats. They truly are natural dog treats!
How many treats for my dog?
As a general rule of thumb, dog treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s overall diet. That said, that rule generally refers to commercial dog treats which, by and large, have no nutritional value whatsoever. But even though these particular homemade dog treats are 100% natural and beneficial for your dog, you should still endeavour to stick to that rule.
Just as importantly, where you do feed your dog treats, you should always make allowance for them in their daily calorie intake. Few things are more harmful for your best friend than excess weight.
I do hope you’ll try these dog treat mixes from The Dog Chef. And if you do, please do let me know what you think of them.
