Versatile chicory

Chicory is a herbaceous, wild-growing, perennial plant of the dandelion family. It’s native to the Mediterranean area. It has been cultivated since the time of the ancient Egyptians as a food source for both animals and humans. Now we know that chicory root is particularly good for dogs too!

The Egyptians also cultivated chicory for its medicinal purposes. As far as is known, they were the first to do so. The ancient Greeks and Romans meanwhile used the plant as both a vegetable and a salad ingredient.

Much later, it is believed in 16th century Prussia, versatile chicory was developed as a coffee substitute. In many parts of the world, chicory coffee remains just as popular today.

Just like the dandelion, every part of the chicory plant is edible. Flower, leaf and root. While it contains various vitamins and minerals in small amounts, chicory root’s most important active compound is inulin, a form of soluble dietary fibre which helps promote good digestive health.

As a local dog nutritionist, I regularly prescribe it for dogs.

A rich source of inulin

Because of its richness in inulin, chicory root is considered one of the best natural sources of prebiotics.

As most of us are aware today, prebiotics are the precursor of probiotics, aka ‘friendly bacteria’. These are essential in ensuring a dog’s healthy digestive system.

Prebiotics help increase beneficial bacteria. This helps aid canine digestion, assist with the absorption of nutrients and strengthens your dog’s immune system. Importantly, it makes your dog’s gut a much less favourable environment for harmful bacteria.

To demonstrate chicory’s versatility even further, some vets actually recommend chicory as a natural means of eliminating intestinal worms in dogs. Canine nutritionists like myself recommend it too!
