Many pet parents are confused about the difference between dog food and human food. The fact is that for thousands of years prior to the relatively recent introduction of commercial dog food, human beings and their dogs ate exactly the same food. Back then, there was no dog food, there was no human food, there was just ‘food’.
The fact that man and dog could share so many of the same foods (the same dog-safe foods) was one of the things that first brought us together and so firmly cemented our enduring relationship. It is one of the main reasons no other animal on the planet—even the domestic cat—shares quite the relationship with human beings as does man’s best friend, the domestic dog.
Our love of food, and in particular the same food, had an enormous bearing on attracting dogs to human settlements. We each could benefit from the same food, but without ever competing with one another for that food because we each valued different parts of those food sources.
